He is an entrepreneur cum philanthropist following his father’s footsteps, who was the co-founder of Amway. From 1993 to 2002, Dick served as CEO of consumer goods Distribution Company (Amway Corporation) and in 2006; he ran for the governor of Michigan but lost to the Democratic candidate, Jennifer Granholm. In 2002, he was listed by Forbes magazine as the 67th richest person in the U.S., with a net worth of about $5.1billion.


Family Business


DeVos gained experience from Amway, his family business. DeVos and his brother (Doug) were tapped as mini hosts, assigned to greet attendees at Amway’s annual conventions, among other jobs like clearing plates during gatherings to playing tennis or waterski. That evolved to speaking in front of investors and offering product demonstrations. Hanging around the company was their social activity.


While working with Amway, DeVos held leading positions in various divisions like research and development, manufacturing, sales, and finance. In 1984, he became the company’s vice president responsible for the daily operations of the firm in 18 nations. Under DeVos’ reliable guidance, the company opened new markets and tripled global sales to exceed domestic sales. When DeVos was the president and CEO of the Orlando Magic Basketball franchise in 1991, Larry Guest wrote that civic and entrepreneurs in Grand Rapids considered DeVos marvelous, polite, compassionate, honorable, community-conscious, and intelligent. DeVos knew that sustainability is not just an environmental concept, but also an economic one. He was aware that if certain approaches were not economically viable, they would not be sustainable.


James Dondero and Highland Capital Management Support the Legacy Campaign

Highland Capital Management continues to put more effort into its philanthropic activities with its latest endeavor being a $1 million grant to The Family Place’s Legacy Campaign. James Dondero, president and co-founder of Highland Capital Management, made the announcement of Highland’s intention to help The Family Place raise the final $2.8 million through offering a $1 million grant during The Family Place’s 21st Annual Texas Trailblazer Awards Luncheon.

The grant will match 50 percent of funds raised towards the Legacy Campaign up to a limit of $1 million and will be managed by the Highland Dallas Foundation.

According to James Dondero, Highland offered the grant as a response to a challenge by Police Chief David Brown and Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings for the community to come together and solve the issue of family violence in Dallas.

According to NexBank, James Dandero continued to add that he was impressed by how The Family Place had run the Legacy Campaign from inception to its current stage and that Highland Capital was proud to support the campaign alongside a thoughtful and generous community. Paige Flink, The Family Place’s CEO, felt that the Legacy Campaign offered a great opportunity to anyone who had wished to help family violence victims in the past and did not have an avenue to do so.

The money raised in the Legacy Campaign will be used to fund the construction of a new Central Dallas Counseling Center. The building will feature 13 emergency shelter bedrooms, a medical and dental clinic, multipurpose spaces for job training, multiple private and group counseling rooms for children and adults and a centralized hotline/call center.

Kevin Seawright Keen on Helping Youth Better Their Lives

Kevin Seawright has his sights set on helping youth excel in education and in life. Through the company he works for, Newark Community Economic Development Corporation, Seawright hopes to empower the local youth.

Earlier on in February this year, Kevin Seawright led his company into a partnership with NewarkWorks and a few prominent persons in Newark in an attempt to help the youth secure summer employment opportunities.

The Summer Youth Employment Plan was geared towards offering summer work experience to students from Newark region. The work experience was in turn expected to bring a positive turnaround in terms of the college graduation rates in the area. The program had been designed to include a range of activities. These include on-job training, empowerment talk sessions, lessons on finance management, and college preparation programs.

 Newark CEDC has been offering student employment programs even in the previous year. This year’s program was quite different from the rest as it had students tendering their applications online for the very first time. The 2016 program had also aimed at increasing the number of students employment opportunities from the year before’s figure of 3,000 to around 3,500.
